This is how Kickabout with the Gents started out, back on my other blog acalmsea
Kickabout with the Gents
Kickabout with the Gents is a casual, yet bleedingly honest football column. My aim here is to satisfy diehard fans such as myself, but also to help educate beginners to the beautiful game. This will hopefully run every week. A helpful glossary at the end of the article will go over any key terms to hasten the education of any budding hooligan. All italicised terms are to be found in the glossary except where they’re obviously for emphasis. This column may contain strong language. Unless I receive complaints I will not change this policy.
Football is known by its disciples as ‘the beautiful game’. Some say it is “just a game”. That may, strictly, be true: but if we are to look at all things in such a joyless, sick way, what the hell are we here for, and what’s the point in doing anything?
Kickabout with the Gents is as much a celebration of my love affair with football (which has persisted for the whole of my life, since the beginning of my memory), as it is an informative guide to the sport from a writer and fan to all followers of the sport- new, experienced, young and old. Football can be the subject ofIntelligent, and funny discussion at the greatest of times- it even transcends that on occasion. Talking about football with other followers gives a warm glow inside which I don’t experience in many other things- collective memory, collective annoyance at inconsistency, adulation at success of your own team: these are affirmative things, things which MAKE LIFE WORTH LIVING!
So, Gents? Fancy a kickabout?
