Kickabout with the Gents- Football’s a Rich Man’s World
One of the big, actually-legitimate, criticisms of football by outsiders, snobs and non-fans is that footballers are paid too much. Maybe this is true. But this isn’t what I’m going to discuss- after-all what is being “paid too much” if your employer can afford to pay it? Why should we decide someone else’s salary or wage is too much? Well, that rests of course on the assumption that clubs can pay these exhorbitant sums.

Football is essentially a geeky sport. People won’t admit this. But the most pigheaded fans will go livid when the rules are not observed. Or even when they are, sometimes. But we’re rational people here so that isn’t to be considered.

The Importance of the Captain
Kickabout with the Gents is a casual, yet bleedingly honest football column. My aim here is to satisfy diehard fans such as myself, but also to help educate beginners to the beautiful game. This will hopefully run every week. A helpful glossary at the end of the article will go over any key terms to hasten the education of any budding hooligan. All italicised terms are to be found in the glossary except where they’re obviously for emphasis. This column may contain strong language. Unless I receive complaints I will not change this policy.
This week the main furore in English football has been over the dramatic 2-1 victory for Manchester City in the League Cup Semi Final (first leg) over bitter rivals Manchester United. Not only was it a tense, competitive match which gave bragging rights to the blue half at least until the second leg at Old Trafford.

It’s been a frighteningly interesting season- this year, however, it was not the relegation battle that engrossed, but it was the renewed fight for the champions’ crown itself, and the much desired Champions League places. Notably, Liverpool lost out on Champions League football, as did big-spenders Manchester City, Spurs finally rising out of mediocrity and qualifying for something real.
